I joined the NHS in 2001 as a general management trainee, with my first placement at UCLH NHS Foundation Trust. I liked it so much that I came back to the Trust after graduating from the scheme, to work as a performance manager in theatres and anaesthesia. I have now worked for UCLH for 19 years, holding a number of operational roles, including divisional management of both Children and Young Peoples services from 2008 – 2011 and then the Heart Hospital from 2011 – 2013. In 2014, I moved into strategy, working as a deputy director and a project director; I was then appointed to Director of Strategy in November 2017 and joined the Board of Directors in March 2021.
My portfolio has expanded over the last few years and now includes strategic development, fundraising, communications, property, integrated care and the development and delivery of all capital projects across the UCLH. I am also the director responsible for COVID testing and COVID vaccinations on behalf of UCLH, working across the North Central London sector for both.
I have significant experience in service redesign, business case development and project management as well as operational management. I was responsible for the build and commission of two brand new major hospitals: (1) The ENT and Dental Hospital in September 2019, amalgamating two of our Hospitals into one location and (2) our flagship cancer and surgery hospital (the Grafton Way Building) which opened in January 2022; this includes the commission of a Proton beam therapy service (one of two for NHS patients in the UK) as well as eight theatres, an ICU and a state-of-the-art Haematology unit. I have three children, including twins, and a very full life, which includes meeting up with trainees from my intake on a quarterly basis, twenty years on.
